Adam Simon “Swipe”
Studio 10
This event has ended.
If theft is the most sincere form of flattery, this exhibition pays homage to images from art history that populate Simon’s memory and consciousness. If repetition is often understood as a lack of inventiveness, here it is used to illuminate the subtleties of visual language.
Through their iconicity, art historical images serve as global shorthand for greatness and as part of our collective memory bank. In this respect, the paintings in Swipe share much with Simon’s stock photography based paintings, which examine prescriptive images of everyday human activity. Both bodies of work use a conceptual framework as a foil for pictorial invention.
