This event has ended.

Kathleen Cullen and Kara Finnerty presents a two-person exhibition featuring the works of Andy Mister and Tim Wilson. The conversation of these two artists, though coming from different mediums on paper, touches upon a background of shared source material and popular culture, creating a synergy of process and surface. Through abstraction and photographic moment, the stillness of these images is evocative and profound.

Andy Mister’s work investigates the boundaries between mechanical and manual reproduction. He meticulously recreates images from a variety of sources — Life Magazine, historical photographs, images from the internet — to create new connections between them. All of these images contain traces of the artist’s hand, transforming the originals from their intended purpose into something personal and private. Disparate images when juxtaposed create a new environment in which the viewer must create his/her own connections. Some of the drawings depict the experience of the human form both in its actual physical appearance and also beyond, in the psychological realm of the disembodied.

Tim Wilson’s work is a product of his process through the application of paint—a kind of analog recording of their own making. Working with oil on paper, Wilson sets up certain criteria in which spontaneous gestures form a gap of aesthetic understanding. The ground becomes complacent with the maneuvering of layers, building environments that function as a mechanical rendering that recalls at once the digital, the photographic, and the sonic. It is a set of terms that form the overall surface, leaving the viewer with a sense of aphrodisiac ephemera, what is hidden and what is uncovered.
