This event has ended.

ArtNowNY is pleased to present The Smith Street Print Project, a show of new, handmade prints by the Brooklyn based Smith Street Tattoo Parlour’s founders Bert Krak, Steve Boltz, Eli Quinters and Dan Santoro. This exhibition is published by Raking Light Projects and printed by Master Printer Paul Mullowney. The series of 18 copper plate etchings, including one handpainted print by each artist, represents the culmination of work produced during each artist’s residency at Mullowney Printing in San Francisco, CA. Fashion label RVCA has produced custom tees for the occasion, which will be given away during the opening event. ArtNowNY will host an opening reception for the artists on February 6th, 2014 from 6 to 9 PM at the gallery (548 W 28th Street 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001).

Smith Street Tattoo Parlour is renowned as the traditional flash art tattoo shop in NYC. In April 2012 the shop’s four founders traveled to San Francisco for the opportunity to work with and learn from Paul Mullowney, the Bay Area’s master printer known for his projects that merge the tattoo and fine art worlds. During that time, and on several subsequent trips, they developed their technique for working in the delicate and unforgiving medium of copper plate etching. A combination of two longstanding traditionshandmade printing and tattooingthe artwork pays homage to classic tattoo motifs while capturing each artist’s style and interpretation.

The overall body of work speaks to the artist’s shared talent for bold line work and skillful coloring expected from craftsmen of their caliber while preserving and promoting tactile based arts practices. The Smith Street Print Project is the first time the artists will exhibit the complete body of work created during their residency, including eight hand etched 18” x 24” prints, six smaller hand etched prints of various dimensions, and four 10” x 12” hand painted prints by each artist.
