This event has ended.

Blackston presents Partial Recovery, Patrick Keesey’s second solo exhibition of paintings and drawings at the gallery.

Keesey’s exhibition is comprised of a selection of mid-sized abstract oil on panel and canvas paintings and smaller-scale studio drawings completed during the artist’s recent residency at Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut.

Keesey’s paintings and drawings are intrinsically linked and foundationally similar: they serve as temporal evidence of a practice focused on the relationship between seeing and marking, on the fundamental disparity between observed and inner worlds. Keesey paints and draws with a focus on the immediate moment — his choices based on what his eye records or what is in his mind’s eye in any given studio session — without a predetermined idea of the final outcome. The works are built up over time, with an allowance for significant density or open space: they are at once serene and frenetic. Each decision made results from an intuitive negotiation by the artist – the pull between construction and erasure.

Keesey’s systematic and contingent accumulation and concentration of lines, marks, pours and pigment over time achieves points of balance and tension between immediate and past actions. The energy of each most recent decision emboldens the evidence of the painting that preceded it, creating a cohesive and overall composite exploration of the world observed. This rigorous approach and the immediacy of Keesey’s mark-making from session to session challenges the established history of each work and creates a dynamic exploration and compression of form, space and time.

Keesey resides in New York City and Marfa, Texas – and is originally from Los Angeles. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Painting. The artist has participated in numerous solo exhibitions, including Fragments and Refractions, Blackston, 2010,Traces and Accumulations, Deffebach Gallery, Hudson, NY, 2010, and Recent Drawings at Bespoke Gallery in 2009. Keesey was a winter, 2013 artist-in-residence at Albers Foundation. He is also a recent recipient of the Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim Artist-in-Residence Program award (upcoming 2015).
