The International Center of Photography introduced many New Yorkers to the works of Miroslav Tichý in 2010. Their exhibition arrived on the heels of a major retrospective at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Half Gallery presents some of these same photographs in our current installation as well as images and drawings which have never been exhibited in the United States. While Tichý died April 12th, 2011 in his hometown of Kyjov, Czech Republic, his work is still being discovered and recontextualized, most recently in Goshka Macuga’s Sexuality of Atoms at Andrew Kreps Gallery. We like to imagine Tichý’s legacy somewhere between Thomas Ruff’s shaky nudes and Carlo Molino’s polaroids, but with a vision and voyeurism all his own.
