This event has ended.

Legendary bassist Milt Hinton (1910-2000) began photographing when he joined Cab Calloway’s band in 1936. His work has appeared in three books, a documentary film, and dozens of exhibitions both here and abroad. His intimate photos give an insider’s view of American music over seven decades.

“I don’t think of myself as a professional. I have no formal training and I never had enough time to develop my technique. I really don’t know the giants in photography except for the people who’ve taken pictures of jazz musicians. As a musician hired to play, I could take photos whenever I wanted, and during all those years I don’t remember anyone ever stopping me. Some of the best shots I ever took happened just because I was in the right place at the right time. I had no idea that some of my shots would eventually be used to document jazz history, but I’m glad I lived to see it. It fulfills one of my lifetime goals – to pass on what I saw and experienced to future generations.” Milt Hinton, 1999
