This event has ended.

Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the exhibition The Mysteries of Ohio, a series of drawing collages by Tony Fitzpatrick. In these forceful, yet delicate works, Fitzpatrick carves a pattern across the heart—or maybe the gut—of the Midwest. Combining overlooked and discarded bits of cigar wrappers, matchbooks, and labels Fitzpatrick celebrates forgotten and marginalized parts of American life. In the artist’s words: “...the odd mysteries of the state of Ohio took over. It is our middle and for the last decade or so, the repository for all of our anger as Americans; a battleground state, (politically and constantly) and a place of eroding hopes and mundane shades of ideological gray.“

In the drawing collage Look at Miss Ohio, 2013 Fitzpatrick riffs on the Gillian Welch song of the same name. Within a solid border of muted colors, ephemera such as butterfly wings, colored dots, musical notes, and ticket stubs form a glittering constellation against a black background. With his layered imagery and materials, Fitzpatrick considers both where we’ve come from and where we’re going:
