The Carter Burden Gallery, formerly gallery 307, presents three new solo exhibitions.

Solomon Ethe utilizes the medium of paint as a conduit of expression, exploring the possibilities inherent in form, color and space. Eschewing the representational or referential, Ethe embraces his medium with adroit skill and undeniable intuition. His canvases, rich in depth and palette, engage the viewer to join him as an equal and active participant in his expressive journey.

In her Tide Paintings, Suejin Jo transforms her interest in water and the tide into masterpieces of texture and color. In these non-representational pieces, the artist employs a technique using both oil and acrylic paints to create highly textured and saturated works. The result is a feast for the viewer’s senses as they experience the work on several levels.

On the Wall, the unique public art installation created exclusively for the Carter Burden Gallery, will feature John Beardman. His installation will revisit old work with a fresh eye, reconnecting with and transforming it through incorporation of new pieces and overpainting. Beardman’s resulting piece will shift the viewer’s experience from one of detail experienced in individual pieces to a vista emerging from the installation.

A New York City native, Solomon Ethe began as an economist, receiving his MBA from Columbia University. After spending 15 years as an economist, he turned his interest to art. In the late 1950s, he acquired a number of pieces by influential artists, including Picabia, Klee, Cornell, Miro, Mondrian, Severini, Malevich, Delaunay and Kupka. Living with these great pieces became his education and inspiration to pursue the creation of his own art. Self taught, Ethe’s paintings explore the possibilities and potentials inherent in form, color and space. He has exhibited in galleries and museums and continues to reside in New York City.

Suejin Jo is a Korean-born abstract painter based in New York. She studied with Stamos and Vytlacil at the Art Students League, winning a McDowell Award juried by Richard Pousette D’art and Romare Bearden which sent her to Europe for a year. Over the years, Jo has painted with a unique medium of oil and dry pigment using the process of “inlay” like Korean potters of the eleventh century. Helen Harrison of The New York Times described Jo’s painting as having “the character of an ancient wall painting”. She is the recipient of a number of awards and has exhibited nationally and internationally. In addition, her work is held in many public and private collections, including the Library of Congress, the WTC Memorial Museum. Recently, the State Department selected Jo’s painting “Pontchartrain” to be included in its 2012 desk calendar “Homage to American Women Artists.” Jo continues to work and live in New York City.

John Beardman, born in Youngstown Ohio, attended Case Institute of
Technology (now Case-Western Reserve) and graduated from Oberlin College, and holds two advanced degrees from Southern Illinois University. He furthered his artistic training at the Sorbonne and Stanley Hayter’s “Atelier 17” in Paris, and studied with Edward Dugmore, Warren Brandt, Milton Resnick, Herman Cherry, and Michael Goldberg. A painter since he began on the family farm at the age of nineteen, he also worked as a professor of art for nearly three decades at the University of Connecticut, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and Oakland University, until dedicating himself solely to his painting in 1990. Beardman has exhibited both nationally and internationally, and has work in many private and public collections. John Beardman continues to be prolific in his painting, working in Nova Scotia and New York City. and
