This event has ended.

Parisian Laundry presents its third Parisian Laundry Project featuring a solo presentation of Valérie Blass hosted here at The Hole. This exhibition kicks off the new Hole initiative where our Gallery 3 space will be used intermittently to showcase top young galleries from cities outside of New York and around the world as they present solo exhibitions of their gallery artists. Parisian Laundry is one of Canada’s leading contemporary art galleries, located in a 15,000 sq. ft. industrial building in Montreal. Here at The Hole in New York City, they present Montreal-based artist Valérie Blass.
Valérie Blass presents new sculptures and photographs that explore intersections between three-dimensional object and image. Her works shift our recognition through assemblage and theatrical staging. Like the black curtain that conceals a backstage, Blass provides hints at mechanisms of interchangeability. This oscillation between object and subject offers a captivating perception of complex and playful material transformations.

Valérie Blass holds an MFA in visual and media arts from Université du Québec à Montréal. She has had solo institutional exhibitions in Montréal, Québec City, Toronto and Calgary. Blass’ work is found in the collections of The National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, The Musée national des beaux arts du Québec, The Royal Bank of Canada, The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and innumerable corporate and private collections throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. In 2012, Blass was commissioned by Public Art Fund New York for a year-long group exhibition at the MetroTech Center and was selected to participate in the major survey exhibition Oh, Canada at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2013, Blass’ work was included alongside such artists as Abbas Akhavan, Nick Relph and LaToya Ruby Fraser in the exhibition Traces of Life in Berlin. The work of Valérie Blass was most recently presented parallel to the Istanbul Biennale at the Art International Istanbul fair and in a group exhibition curated by Geoffrey Farmer at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Blass’ third major solo exhibition at Parisian Laundry will open in January 2014.

This temporary exhibition is part of Parisian Laundry’s nomadic profile, which creates international visibility for Canadian artists in curated exhibitions outside the ordinary commercial art fair. The gallery’s satellite program was launched in 2012 with exhibitions in Toronto and Berlin. Parisian Laundry is one of Canada’s leading private contemporary art galleries. Situated in the vibrant city of Montreal, the gallery is dedicated to the presentation of critical solo exhibitions of its represented artists, while hosting international artists through an invitational platform. Parisian Laundry would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts for their support of this exhibition.
