MINUS SPACE presents the exhibition Lynne Harlow: Against the Velvet of the Long Goodbye. This is the Providence, Rhode Island-based artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery and it will feature a site-sensitive installation consisting of colored flood lights, white vinyl rain curtain, and live performance on electric guitar.
Lynne Harlow’s new installation Against the Velvet of the Long Goodbye continues her ongoing inquiry into the intersection of reductive visual art and music, specifically rock and roll. It expands upon previous multidisciplinary works, such as BEAT (2007) and Tangerine (2012), and emphasizes the experience of simultaneously seeing both pure color in the form of light and a single instrument performed live. The artist comments, “Color and sound will occupy the air.”
In her work, Harlow asks the profoundly simple question: “How little is enough?” Her resulting installations are lean and finely-calibrated, yet immersive and generous in nature towards the viewer. Harlow states, “My role is comparable to that of a composer or choreographer. I establish parameters and introduce specific components, but leave the interpretation of these elements to individual participants and their moment.” She continues, “’Velvet’ is a cumulative piece that becomes richer with every sound played in the space. The piece and its life expand with each player. Every sound contributes. The piece is not static–-its history builds and grows.”
Against the Velvet of the Long Goodbye is a line from the song Crying Time by musician Pete Galub, who will lead an opening night performance at 7pm. Gallery visitors are encouraged to play the guitar throughout the course of the exhibition.
Lynne Harlow (b.1968 Attleboro, MA; lives Providence, RI) has exhibited her work nationally and internationally for the past decade, including in the United States, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
Harlow is currently included in the 2013 deCordova Biennial at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA, on view now through April 13, 2014. Her work was also recently acquired by the RISD Museum (Providence, RI) and is currently on view in their exhibition Locally Made, which continues through November 3.
Harlow’s other recent museum exhibitions include MoMA PS1 (NYC); Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art (Ithaca, NY); Brattleboro Museum of Art + Art Center (Brattleboro, VT); and Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (Oaxaca, Mexico). She has received awards from the Chinati Foundation, Rhode Island Foundation, and BAU Institute, and her work has been reviewed in Artforum, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Providence Journal, and Artnet Magazine. Her installation BEAT, which premiered at MINUS SPACE in 2007, was highlighted in Artforum’s Best of 2012 issue (Thomas Crow’s review of Notations: The Cage Effect Today, Hunter College/Times Square Gallery, NYC). Harlow’s work is included in public collections, such as The Museum of Modern Art (NYC); RISD Museum (Providence, RI); Art in Embassies (Washington, DC); and Hunter College (NYC).
