An homage to the owl. What other bird has such a multiplicity of personalities that range from the profound dark and deep violence of the raptor to high off the map giddiness and all emotions in between.

Cavin-Morris Gallery presents an exhibition in collaboration with Hayashibara Company in Japan, which sponsors facilities that make materials available for artists with disabilities.

Several years ago the Company sponsored a highly received exhibition called My Mona Lisa in which artists were asked to voluntarily submit their impressions of the Leonardo Da Vinci painting. We saw it in Tokyo and were quite delighted. We then visited several of the facilities and very much liked what we saw and how each artists’ integrity was not compromised by the micro-management found in so many workshops where art is used (legitimately) as a therapy tool rather than a pathway to individual artistic expression.

We were so inspired at the time by what we saw that we wanted to try it in the gallery with another theme with less baggage and more open to complete individual expression. The result was Fukuro: Owls of Hayashibara, Japan.

Using whatever medium each artist chose, from paper to ceramic to cloth, this exhibition carries every nuance of owlhood, from the folkloric to the mass media comic to the whispered abstraction. We were stunned by the range and power of the results and are pleased to pass them on to you.
