This event has ended.

Kiyoka Yamagata was born in Nagoya, Aichi.
Currently resides in Shibuya, Tokyo.

Yamagata started drawing when she was 5 years old. It used to be her little secret until she was encouraged to show her work in 2009. Since then she has been consistently showing her works in galleries and art fairs in New York, Europe and Japan.
Yamagata uses vivid colors to paint her journeys to the better state.

On the day of 9/11, she was in lower Manhattan, experienced the incident first hand. She witnessed people in panic; crying, screaming, shouting, exhausted… She was at first in deep thoughts wondering when she can go back to Japan, what exactly will happen next… That was when she started to notice small delis and restaurants still being in the business. From then on, she witnessed how New York quickly came back to the state of ordinary next 2 weeks. Witnessing how things go down to unimaginable level and come right back up with such toughness, she was strongly encouraged to start believing in herself’s ability and accepting the reality.
All of the motifs and figures in her paintings are fighting to reach for the hopes and dreams in this cruel world. She paints what has happened in her life both good and bad, suffering and adoring, and the act of painting the situation is the process of studying and translating the meaning of what has happened.
