This event has ended.

On the occasion of Ad Reinhardt’s Centennial, TEMP Art Space presents Correspondences: Ad Reinhardt at 100, an exhibition that displays Reinhardt’s rarely shown writings, notes, and diagrams alongside works by thirteen established and emerging contemporary abstract artists.

Correspondences features works by Sebastian Black, Keltie Ferris, Wade Guyton, Jacob Kassay, Zak Kitnick, Scott Lyall, Yoshiaki Mochizuki, Olivier Mosset, Steven Parrino, Nathlie Provosty, Julia Rommel, Michael Scott, and Don Voisine.

Correspondences is the inaugural exhibition of Curatorial Projects, the Brooklyn Rail’s newest arts initiative. The exhibition is organized with the support of the Ad Reinhardt Foundation, and coincides with a major exhibition of the artist’s work at David Zwirner (November 7-December 18). In his own time, Reinhardt was a strong supporter of younger artists, as well as their most virulent critic. In this spirit Correspondences suggests that Reinhardt’s art and thinking continues to be important for artists working today by functioning as a critical yardstick and moral compass by which to assess their work. Reinhardt’s ideas, far from serving as a template for the artists in the exhibition, act as an intellectual counterpoint by which to test their work’s formal and theoretical stance. Wide ranging conversations about art and aesthetics are proposed, rather than narrow considerations of legacy, which Reinhardt specifically avoided because he didn’t “want to make any troubles for the young artists, but leave them free.”

A significant cross section of artists have either created work specifically for the exhibition or are loaning pieces that are personally significant to them and their artistic practices. A portion of any sales will go to the Ad Reinhardt Foundation to aid them in their mission of supporting young artists.

Correspondences: Ad Reinhardt at 100 is curated by Alex Bacon and Harrison Tenzer, with the assistance of Louise Makowski and Nick Irvin, and is generously supported by the Ad Reinhardt Foundation, The Brooklyn Rail, and TEMP Art Space.
