Guided by Invoices presents an exhibition of paintings by Roy Walter.
A solitary and profoundly Christian man, Roy Walter has sought little contact with the contemporary art world during the 50-year span of his career. His narrative compositions build on the iconography of Christian art and history painting. The selection on view gathers a body of work created in and around the year 1968, an intense period of questioning in the artist’s life that culminated in a prolific output of
meditative works in which moral anchoring points emerge now and again. Here, poetic meaning is emphasized rather than accurate rendering of form to reveal an art rich in emotional expression ranging from innocent bliss to remitting psychological torment. Roy Walter was born in Queens, New York in 1938. He currently lives and works in New York City.
