This event has ended.

This exhibition, titled “The Truro Paintings”, expands on a body of work influenced by the vastly beautiful, ever changing and dynamic natural environment of the far end of Cape Cod, where the artist, Martha Sedgwick, maintains a studio. Through the language of abstraction, Sedgwick allows the internal and inherent logic of the paintings to emerge building upon the foundational structure of a loosely painted grid. Sedgwick adds and subtracts a tangle of gestures and marks, the accumulation of which reveals relationships formed through a process driven approach. Through an ongoing interplay between the observed world and Sedgwick’s studio practice, a body of work is created which references a physical alchemy that defines material being. Sedgwick’s works draws influence from Brice Marden’s sensuous ribbon paintings, the lush, saturated color of Matisse’s cut outs, and Japanese scroll painting. Martha Sedgwick received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The School of Visual Arts in 1978. She has exhibited widely throughout the United States and in New York City at Rosenberg + Kaufman Fine Arts, A.I.R. Gallery and Artists Space. Her most recent solo show was in April 2012 at Stephen Rosenberg Fine Arts, in New York City. Her work is included in many private and public collections, including the W Hotel Group, McKinsey and Company, and Golden Artist Colors. Sedgwick lives and works in New York City and Truro, MA. Her work may be seen online at www.marthasedgwick.com
