Both Chung and Pereznieto draw inspiration from the natural world, yet depart from strict realistic representation by incorporating whimsical elements from their own imaginative worlds. Chloe Chung’s biomorphic and dynamic abstractions are suggestive of transitional natural phenomena, such as the formation of a cloud, or the flight of a bird, though the viewer is left to speculate. Leonardo Pereznieto’s paintings and sculptures depict the matter of personal fantasy and memory, elevated to mythic proportion through technical artistic expertise and playful sentimentality: a winged woman gazes through a painted layer of condensation. Through their works, both Chung and Pereznieto reach out to the viewer through surrealistic twists of longing and romance.
