This event has ended.

SPACEWOMb Gallery presents SYNAPTIC TALES, a solo exhibition of Installation Sculptor, Sunsook Roh’s new body of work as an extension of ‘Tree of Life V, Landscape of the Psychology of the Mind’ created in 2010. This will be her first solo exhibition in New York.

SYNAPTIC TALES offers viewers an experience of looking through windows to view Roh’s sculptures from two perspectives; ‘into own mindscape’ and ‘out onto societal reality’.

To explore the interior space of mind and memories, Roh examines both worlds of the conscious and unconscious, where she then creates something new in the three dimensional form by overlapping the visible and invisible. Having borrowed the external forms of human brain cells and abstracting them for a new visual experience, Roh’s concerns over time, transience and mortality have been expressed in layers of depth; first shaped in clay, casted into a silicon rubber mold, and finally multi-layered in a resin cast. The windows are shown in different visual details from each side so that viewers can interconnect their own neural pathways and external societal reality.

In reference to the inside of the brain, metaphorically, Roh has created an abstract representation of neurons and synapses in an overhead installation at the gallery for viewers to walk through, re-examine and recollect their stored memories. The coding experiences into memories, decoding of recollection, and significance in the understanding and the coding of new experiences into new memories are explored in this installation.

Roh hopes for those who see the landscapes, through her sculptures and installations, will discover the dormant energy deeply rooted in the mind and confront ones true self and experience a possible healing process for oneself and humanity.
