In 1966 photographer Thomas Hoepker, who was then working for Stern Magazine in Germany, was given an assignment to photograph the world’s heavyweight champion who had recently changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali. What followed was a series of intimate and candid photographs that documented the rise of Ali and the journey that Hoepker took with Ali during this tumultuous time in US history.
