This Thursday, SHOW ROOM will be opening Writing on the Wall, an exhibition by poet Max Blagg. Well-known around Lower Manhattan for performances of his poetry, Blagg here takes poem excerpts and presents them on a collection of typewriter cases. This re-purposing of the writing machine takes Blagg’s writing into a sculptural, visceral realm, making them almost audible as they float in the space.

This is Blagg’s first exhibition since The Hotel Firbank Archive, his epic collaboration with artist Ken Tisa, displayed only once, at PS1 in 1980, prior to the Archive’s mysterious disappearance.

Max Blagg was born in England and has lived in New York City since 1972. He has performed his poetry in and around New York City since the 1970s at The Kitchen, Jackie 60, the National Arts Club, The Performing Garage, the Parrish Museum, and more. He has also collaborated with several artists, including Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, and Alex Katz. He is the author of several books, including Licking the Fun Up (Aloe Books, London); Monkey (Appearances, New York); Pink Instrument (Lumen Editions, Boston); Five Days (Shallow Press, New York); What a Man Should Know (J. Crew Books, New York); and The Little Dress (Shallow Press, New York).

Blagg most recently released the semi-faux memoir Ticket Out (Shallow Press, New York); and a collection of his work, Slow Dazzle: Poems 1990 - 2010, is forthcoming this year.
