School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Plane Sight,” an exhibition of constructions and paintings by current students and recent alumni, featuring works that comment on modernist abstraction. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of SVA Galleries, the exhibition is on view August 19 through September 21 at the Westside Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
Autumn-Grace Dougherty (MFA 2013 Fine Arts) makes fabric paintings that reference both the tradition of quilt piecing and contemporary abstract painting. Using recycled textiles and old clothing, the artist paints richly colored patterns on the found fabrics, and then stitches them together into exquisitely balanced compositions that convey both exuberant spontaneity and rigorous formality.
Bo Kim’s (MFA 2013 Fine Arts) oil on canvas paintings combine elemental organic forms with a subtle palette of mauves, ochres and grays applied in delicate, thin layers of color. Hand-drawn circles and ovals blend with biomorphic imagery in balanced, meditative compositions that invite viewers to discover unexpected associations.
Art Vidrine (an MFA Fine Arts student) presents artworks composed with embroidery thread that oscillate between painting and sculpture. In Sketches for Stephen, the artist bundles this thread into a dense network of looping, colored lines to create small teardrop forms which are hung in a row. Soft yet dense, both linear and volumetric, the artwork achieves a compelling synthesis of two- and three- dimensional space.
