Guided by Invoices presents The Responsibility of Forms, an exhibition of paintings by Cora Cohen.

For three decades Cora Cohen has been known as an artist of abstract paintings. The group of recent works on view demonstrates the extension of Cohen’s engagement with the materiality and production of painting. Here, veils of water-based paint, deliberately applied, combine in a painterly syntax to articulate an anti-heroic, impure abstraction.

Like many painters working today including Terry Winters, Ron Gorchov, and Suzan Frecon, Cohen revisits late modernism. While asserting absence and including the possibility of uncertainly, her visual language confirms presence, and offers the viewer an active participation. The artist has stated, “I am for keeping the perceptual experience open to exchange. I am interested in making an art that offers space in which to roam around, a space in which to get lost, an uncharted space where time feels non-finite, and can be wasted.”
