Sverre Bjertnes “Cold Reading”

James Fuentes LLC

This event has ended.

James Fuentes presents Sverre Bjertnes first solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will be comprised of painting, sculpture, and drawing, and will debut a new film by the artist.

Born in Trondheim, Norway, 1977, Bjertnes has had more than a dozen solo exhibitions and his work has appeared in numerous group exhibitions.

Bjertnes is a frequent collaborator with fellow Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard. Their collaborations were seen most recently at the New York Armory Show 2013 (Rod Bianco Gallery, Oslo), and in Oslo in a two-artist, two-gallery exhibition at Rob Blanco Gallery (Laying the Ghost, February 10 — March 31, 2012) and Galleri K (Climate Confusion Assistance, February 10-March 11, 2012). Previous collaborations have included an exhibition at Maccarone gallery in New York, curated by Melgaard (After Shelley Duvall ‘72, September 17-October 22, 2011). New York Magazine art critic Jerry Saltz named the Maccarone show as one the ten best shows of 2011, as did writers Scott Rothkopf and Matthew Higgs in Artforum’s year-end review of the best of 2011. VG (one of Norway’s most read daily newspapers) Art critic Lars Elton rated the Oslo double-bill exhibitions #2 (second only to the Edvard Munch exhibition at the Munch Museum) on his list of the 10 best exhibitions in 2012.

Bjertnes first New York exhibition took place at White Columns in 2013: Sverre Bjertnes: If you really loved me you would be able to admit that you’re ashamed of me, A Projective Identification by Bjarne Melgaard (March 12-April 20).

Bjertnes received his artistic training as a student of Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik. In 1993 he became a student of Odd Nerdrum. From 1995 to 1999, he studied at the National Academy of Fine Art in Oslo, for the first year under Arvid Pettersen, and subsequently under Jan Valentin.

Bjertnes’ work is in the permanent collections of the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo; Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum, Tønsberg (Norway); The Art Museum of Northern Norway (Nordnorsk
Kunstmuseum), Tromsø; Trondheim Kunstmuseum, Trondheim (Norway); Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, Vestfossen (Norway); and St. Olavs Hospital, Trondheim. He is the recipient of the Tildelt Anders Jahres Kulturpris in 2010.
