This event has ended.

James Cohan Gallery New York presents Hiraki Sawa: Figment. This is Japanese-born, London-based artist Hiraki Sawa’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. Lineament (2012), the central installation, is a video and sound installation originally commissioned by the Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo, in 2012. This work is a continuation of a series of works under the larger project title Figment, from which this exhibition takes its name. Figment is a body of work that Sawa began in 2009 which explores the phenomenon of amnesia, which was inspired by a friend who suffered from sudden onset and complete memory loss.

In his essay “The Line Describes a Circle”, written for the Shiseido Gallery catalogue, Tom Morton states, “In common usage, the English word ‘lineament’ refers to a line that describes an object, often a human face or body. In its more specific geological usage, however, it refers to a topographical feature on the surface of the earth that indicates an underlying fault. Lineament is a film about what happens to an individual when his internal narrative is erased. At first glance, the boy appears unchanged by his sudden bout of amnesia, but surely, his outer contours betray a subcutaneous breach.”
