This event has ended.

Marianne Barcellona loves raw nature but lives with conflict: "I'm a New York City girl - I can walk down the Bowery alone at 3 am, but put me in the woods and every snap of a twig portends a bear or a snake." Because travel to the nature that obsesses her is expensive and difficult, Barcellona works from photographs. "But a photo flattens everything, including time - it's a desiccated sign for the real experience." So Barcellona reverses this process by re-introducing time: trekking with her drawing tools instead of her boots, she mentally "walks into" the image, claws her way through claustrophobic foliage, trips over logs, encounters barriers. When she loses her way she retraces her steps by tearing away previous marks and patching to re-establish fresh ground - always bringing her existential angst with her.

Barcellona grew up in Dallas, graduated from Oberlin College and pursued a full career as an editorial photographer before turning her attention to painting. She has been awarded Fellowships at many internationally renowned Residency programs, including The Baer Art Center (Iceland), Ucross Foundation and Jentel Artist Residency Program (Wyoming), and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York).
