Resobox Gallery presents s group exhibition themed “Long Island City life, time and history”.
Various artists and photographers will show their view on the neighborhood: life in LIC, art, people, streets, history and current development. By this we want to say that there is a great potential of LIC as a new artists’ destination.
Also visitors will be surprised with fantastic mural art on one of the gallery’s wall about LIC life created by Gabino A. Castelan and Kelly Lopez and exclusive photos of Nothern Boulevard from the beginning of 20th century.
Gabino Abraham Castelán was born in 1986 in Epatlan, Puebla, Mexico. He is an artist who lives and works in New York City. He obtained his BFA from Hunter College in 2012. Gabino has been nominated to be part of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Residency for 2014. He currently works as an Artist-Teacher at the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Gabino is collaborating with Kelly Lopez to create a mural on one of the gallery’s walls.

My work investigates the sociocultural evolution through out the different ages, cultural, and social developments. It aims to strengthen human relationships by engaging with the public realm – the streets, the open social and culture space. I do this through rescuing, preserving and recycling the materials, which come from the streets. I call them Dead-Humble Objects. My murals and sculptures, the so-called “Tension-Sculptures”, have drawings of images I find in books on history, culture and society. I also include personal pictures, and pictures of working people in urban communities. My questions aim to provoke human reflection and formalized social thinking.
Rafael Octavio Gonzalez was born in Villavicencio, Colombia, also known as “El Meta.” Raised in the Queensbridge area of Long Island City, and currently resides in East Elmhurst, Queens. He is both a self-taught photographer and technical professional with over fifteen years of experience working for corporations, such as Prudential, IBM, and Red Hat.

Resobox will represent his panoramas of Long Island City, black and white and colored which depict the stark contrast with how the waterfront looks today.
Ana Sánchez is an artist, a student at LaGuardia Community College and LIC resident. Her artistic journey began at LaGuardiaCommunity College three years ago after many years of creating, designing and managing programs for the City of New York.Sunnyside Gardens
When I retired from the work force, it was an awakening to find that there has always been an artist in me who does not fear change and who enjoys challenges. My art reflects this propensity. I have had a lifetime of careers and the art of self-discovery can only enrich my life. This journey of self- discovery through artistic means has been an extraordinary voyage.
Katherine Volpe is an artist, inspired by the neighborhood. Her artworks represented at the exhibition show both the deep contradiction and interaction at the same time between fast-paced city and nature, depict the presence of beauty in the environment we live in, these images connect to an emotional tie to the combination of natural and manmade city life.
Long Island City has gone through a great reformation in the past few years. Adding more parks to the area has been a wonderful edition, which in turn, made the environment more attractive to live in.
Hailing from New york City Jenri Gonzalez emerged on the art scene In 2007. He began his journey at the tender age of 4 after watching his father draw. Jenri furthered his passion after visiting museums and Looking at the works of Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh he also looked for inspiration in anime watching Pokemon, Dragon ball z, Tenchi Muyo, Sailor Moon and cartoonist and creator of the Homies David Gonzales. Jenri Gonzalez paints about his life experiences ranging from his difficult childhood, living in poverty, the taste of defeat, his alter ego “Rabbit Morose”, love affairs and his experiences growing up misunderstood, rejected and trying to find his place in this world.
Aimée MacCormac, whose artistic nomenclature is Francesca Aimée, is a self-taught painter with a multicultural background. Having a diverse artistic expression, she is drawn to both fine art and functional art, often lingering where the two overlap. Aimée first started drawing seriously as a child, which led to painting as a teenager, and ultimately to three-dimensional form as an adult. She acquired the ability to work in different materials such as stained glass & ceramics, endowed with a distinctive non-traditional style all her own. Though interested in various mediums, her paintings & sculptures have always fed each other, as if bleeding together, even relying on those connections for their very sustenance. This symbiotic relationship extended to jewelry as well where she draws on her fine art roots to nourish her every design, including her rhythmic beaded creations and her wearable fine art micro-sculptures; carved in wax, cast in metal, & accented with set stones. The evolution of Aimée’s creative wonder continues to unfold, parallel to the course of her life.

Christopher Bailey‘s early years in Florida, and travels have inspired him to collect and create art that portray diverse, yet unifying stories. Christopher Bailey loves to work with watercolors & pen and pencil line work. As his life evolves he expects to develop a passion for other media and materials. He remains open to the wonders that provoke something within, and discovering new ways to challenge himself.
Nina and Georgi Tushev, artists and designers, live in LIC and under the name of Tushevs Aerials have an art project building and flying home-built remote-control airplanes outfitted with cameras. They were just selected to participate in Queens International 2013. Their videos of flights over LIC will be projected during the whole period of exhibition.
Exhibition includes exclusive works of Pierre Pullis, 1929 and Eugene de Salignac, 1921 with historical last century view on Nothern Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard. Eugene de Salignac documented the creation of the city’s modern infrastructure—including bridges, major municipal buildings, roads and subways. Most notably, he documented the construction of the Manhattan Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge, and the Manhattan Municipal building but his most famous image is that of painters posing nonchalantly on the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge. In his lifetime de Salignac’s work was little seen outside of New York City government, and his name was forgotten after his death in 1943. His images were rediscovered in the 1980s, but it was not until 1999 that an archivist realized the collection was mostly the work of one man.
