Time Equities Inc. presents the newest exhibition at the West 10th Window: Pamela Council, Blaxidermy Venus. The West 10th Window is the newest addition to the Art-In-Buildings program: an exhibition space located at 223-225 West 10th Street that exists solely as a storefront window, level with the sidewalk, completely unassuming, allowing artwork to be seen exclusively from the street.

Pamela Council, Blaxidermy Venus, explores the idea of a higher order of beauty by referencing motifs of love goddesses and using tools of modern beauty such as acrylic fake fingernails, plastic hair beads, marble contact paper, tennis balls, rubber from sneakers, and nail polish. Council’s intricate sculpture uses contemporary readymade materials to create an abstract seascape. Blaxidermy Venus allows us to challenge ideas of modern beauty by repossessing mass produced, familiar beauty objects as sculpture, challenging their associations and power. The subject is apt for this storefront exhibition space; our neighbors include beauty and fashion boutiques, all of which display their products as one would expect to see them.

Pamela Council received a BA from Williams College and is currently a candidate for MFA in Visual Arts at Columbia University. Council’s work has been included in several group exhibitions, including Williams College Museum of Art, Southampton Historical Museum, Kianga Ellis Projects, among others. In 2012, she was a resident at The Wassaic Project, Wassaic, NY. Council was born in Southampton, NY and lives in New York, NY.
