Charlie Roberts "Girl Power"
Kravets/Wehby Gallery
This event has ended.
In "Girl Power," Charlie Roberts presents new works on canvas. In his paintings, Roberts plays with the representation of women in different imagined scenarios. The women depicted in the paintings, often in a state of repose or play, evoke overtly bacchanalian scenes. Relying heavily on different patterning and bright colors to set the mood of his work, "Girl Power" posits women in the center of different settings ranging from a nightclub, to a pool, to a séance.
Roberts contextualizes the women he depicts as key creative figures in the paintings. Influenced by 17th century Dutch Baroque painting, the women are depicted as the creators of famous artwork, from Picasso and Matisse to Keith Haring. This reversal of roles emphasizes the centering of the female figure in a powerful position in Roberts’ painted world.
