Kathryn Markel Fine Arts presents an exhibition opening in Chelsea of new work by painter Josette Urso.

With elation and abandon, like children playing on a "snow day", Josette Urso paints to explore the world outside her studio window. By working intuitively, nearly involuntarily, Urso's paintings reflect the movement of the moment-to-moment changes of her environment. Using painting as a tool to supplant vision, Urso explores those contrasting relationships of the world around her-light and dark, winter and summer, sun and rain. She responds to these binaries organically, building up forms and paints that seem to dance, meander, and hopscotch their way across the canvas as each relationship reveals itself to her.

Urso's work reflects an impulsivity and urgency, which belie her attention to her inspirations, which are often fleeting and may otherwise be lost. Urso claims that her work is a commentary on the 'live' qualities of experience" and that through her work "[she expresses her] joy in being part of the physical world."

Josette Urso has shown widely in the United States and abroad in both public and private institutions including the New York Public Library, the Drawing Center, and the Bronx Museum for the Arts. She has been awarded numerous grants and residencies in particular the National Endowment for the Arts, Basil H. Alkazzi, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation as well as the Camargo Foundation and Yaddo. Urso lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
