Crossing Art presents Paralleling Narratives, a solo exhibition featuring the mixed media and photographic works by Ana De Orbegoso. This marks her premiere exhibition at Crossing Art.

A native of Lima, Peru and currently based in New York, Ana De Orbegoso was born with a passion to express herself. Paralleling Narratives will explore De Orbegoso’s intricate visual forms of expression by juxtaposing a selection of her series from the past and present. Each series, more so projects, depict popular iconography and staged situations using photography and several forms of mixed media with subjects that populate her world. Although the projects are different in their executed style, all carry out performative elements that are staged rather than captured, “… to seduce and beckon your human sensation” as De Orbegoso so eloquently states.

Whether it’s a Greek boy over-reaching his ambition in the series, Icarus and the Myth of the Fallen Angel (2012); a fabricated world in Disutopia exemplifying the current social condition where reality is blurred with artificiality; an individual who creates pseudo barriers and identities to avoid realizing his/her true self in The Invisible Wall (2002-04); or visual depictions of the ongoing inner-dialogues we establish within ourselves in her other series, Intra (2002); to De Orbegoso, each project is simply the final product of an arduous process initiated by a concept stemmed from exploring the individual or social-psyche. Placing them in one space, translates them as paralleling narratives in an attempt to transfer the visual to an actual dialogue.

Ana De Orbegoso is a Peruvian visual artist based in New York, whose interdisciplinary practices are triggered by her artistic sense. Recipient of a 2008 NYFA, NALAC and En Foco fellowships, her work has been widely exhibited and collected. De Orbegoso also received the En Foco New Works Photography Award and first prize in the 2006’s Fotografia Peruana competition. Her project Vírgenes Urbanas based on colonial paintings of the School of Cusco, an ongoing traveling exhibit around Peru’s different regions, cities and small towns, is to this day the most locally exhibited art project in Peruvian history.
