This event has ended.

Galerie Protégé presents No Picture No Name, a survey of contemporary photography with works by Mia Berg, Frank Carino, Christian Cognazzo, Jesse Gammage, Lissy Laricchia, Monika Merva, Mitch Paster, Corey Riddell, Stephen K Schuster, Dana Sherwood, Nathaniel Ward, Bryan McGovern Wilson, and Evan Yee. In 2013, photography has become an extremely contested medium; exalted as art, and knocked down to merely pedestrian throughout the past 50 years. All of this before the advent of the digital and the likes of Instagram weighted with all of the problems of our present paradigm filled with the captured image.

Photographers struggle to identify their place in an environment overpopulated by images. Now the novice can act as “operator” in a Benjaminian sense, able to make what was once classified as an art photograph, due to the technical accessibility of the digital camera. Some photographers try to push their medium forward in a world where new is next to impossible and old ideas of the definition of photo-as-art are becoming more and more irrelevant. No Picture No Name defends photography as art beyond the decorative or mere record of one’s existence. Each artist in this exhibition asks us, the visual consumer, to question the role of the photograph. This is done in a myriad of ways such as experimenting with exhibition strategy, reviving antiquated processes, and creating complete abstraction with some still fighting for plastic and gelatin ideals.
