This event has ended.

Matt Jones creates work in a variety of inter-related genres that explore astronomy, theoretical physics, ancient history, and comedy. These bodies of work develop from and are inspired by research and personal experience. Together they allow Jones to evaluate, negotiate, and play with the world around him.

Jones is a student of physics and astronomy, including all things science fiction and fantasy. His preoccupation with these subjects manifests in his rigorous creative output. In Planetary, the artist channels his obsessions and studies into a non-linear narrative populated with paintings and sculptures. Jones’ work is informed by science though he does not let the discipline’s precision meddle with his aesthetic. Planetary follows the adventures of an unnamed scientist-explorer as he treks through the multiverse. Each work is an artifact or memento from his quest to better understand existence. This is Jones’ seventh solo exhibition.

Matt Jones (b. 1980, Rochester, NY) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Jones received his BFA from The Cooper Union, was awarded the Vera T. Carroll Prize for Painting, and attended the Yale University Norfolk Summer School of Painting through the Ellen Battel Stoeckel Grant. His paintings, installations, videos, and sculptures have been exhibited extensively in galleries, with solo and two-person exhibitions in New York, Berlin, Salt Lake City, and Brisbane, Australia, as well as in a number of prominent institutions including the Morris Museum and Mass MoCA. Jones’s work has been reviewed and written about in Purple Diary, I-D, NY Arts Magazines, Artnet, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Paper magazine and others.

Planetary will be periodically activated by performances and interdisciplinary events. On August 14th TED Fellow Lucianne Walkowicz will join Matt Jones for a discussion on astrophysics, art, and meditation. Walkowicz’ work on NASA’s Kepler mission studies “the tempestuous tantrums of stellar flares.” She is also an artist and her latest project consists of harnessing data from stars’ flares that she converts into audible frequencies to develop as songs and melodies to her mediation practice.
