This event has ended.

Horton Gallery presents the group exhibition Merge Visible featuring Trudy Benson, Laura Miller, Daniel Gordon, John Houck, Terry Haggerty, Susie Rosmarin, Michael Staniak, Keegan McHargue, and Ryan Johnson.

“Merge Visible” references the Photoshop command that collapses active layers into one. Along with its correlates—Merge Down andFlatten—the command Merge Visible is an image editor’s ninja move: a swift gesture that, while yielding no apparent changes, discards what’s hidden from view, paring down multiple levels of content into a single flat image.

In their paintings, photographs, and sculptures, the nine artists exhibited in Merge Visible all collapse and flatten pictorial space—a move that references modern and contemporary art’s progressive upending of older representational traditions, but, even more resonantly, responds to the increasing day-to-day prevalence of monitors, flat-screens, and other two-dimensional, digital modes of perception.
