This event has ended.

For his second exhibition at Metro Pictures, David Maljković presents an animation, film installation, sound works and display forms, along with collaged inkjet prints mounted on aluminum and a slide projection. The exhibited works are a continuation of Maljković’s interest in the arbitrary relationship between form and content, as well as his ongoing reassessment of the historical artistic legacy of modernism, his own work and art in general.

In the animation Afterform, Maljković uses characters from a cartoon published in a Croatian architectural magazine from the 1960s. The original cartoon satirized modernism and by animating the characters and incorporating his own formalist works into the animation, Maljković contributes to and expands on the early commentary made by the cartoon. Similarly, the collages and slide projection in the exhibition use the artist’s earlier works to evoke Maljković’s past problematizations of form.

Undated is a film that presents the familiar image of the artist’s hands in the process of making. For the film, Maljković filmed the 90-year-old Croatian sculptor Ivan Kožarić as he sculpts a nondescript form that Maljković isolated and digitally manipulated in post-production. The distortion of the image is accompanied by the amplification and distortion of the sound made by the film projector.

Maljković deftly reevaluates conventions of display and reuses and repositions his own artworks, images and presentation methods. In his 2009 show at the gallery he exhibited Lost Pavilion, a sculptural reconstruction of the American pavilion on the grounds of the Zagreb Fair that rested on a plinth, from which a thudding sound emanated. In this exhibition, Maljković presents Display for Lost Pavilion. In this work the plinth is exhibited without the sculpture and a microphone is inserted into the vacant hole where a speaker once was.

David Maljković’s survey exhibition “Sources in the Air,” which originated at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and traveled to BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and will be on view at GAMeC in Bergamo, Italy October 4 – June 6, 2014. The catalogue for the show is available at the gallery. In November, Maljković has a one person show at CAC Vilnius scheduled and in fall 2014 a major exhibition at Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Other one-person exhibitions include Kunsthalle Basel; SculptureCenter, New York; Secession, Vienna; Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; Whitechapel, London; CAPC Musee d’art Contemporain, Bordeaux; and MoMA PS1, New York. His work has been in group shows at Kunsthaus Bregenz; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; MUSAC Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y Léon, Spain; The Power Plant, Toronto; Wiels Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels; and Centre Pompidou, Paris.
