This event has ended.

Forever & Today, Inc. presents Swedish artist Magnus Thierfelder’s meanwhile…, a site-specific exhibition exploring urban space in a contemplative and playful manner. meanwhile… also marks a new chapter in Forever & Today, Inc.’s mission to create platforms for local and international artists to engage the public while continuing to curate and commission works by a single artist, collective, or collaborative entity.

For the exhibition, Thierfelder takes over the third floor, stairwell, and rooftop of a three-story former soap factory building in the Dumbo Historic District of Brooklyn. Engaging the architectural space, Thierfelder intentionally and incidentally creates cinematic vignettes for viewers as they move through the installation. The exhibition includes stop motion video animation, projection, site-specific sound, and sculptural assemblage. Using the streets of New York as his inspiration, Thierfelder acts as a flâneur, finding everyday objects and refuse and infusing them with subtle and charming personalities all their own. The resulting works are connected to his field notes from frequent walks he conducts almost daily as “records of the anatomy of a city.”

meanwhile…, 2013, a 3-channel stop motion video installation, features small wonders. A discarded lollipop stick rotates endlessly like the hand of a clock, plastic street barriers sway back-and-forth, and a small water puddle pulsates like a tiny heart—all loops accompanied by a soundtrack of found and composed sound. A projection, State of Mind, 2013, depicts bricks balancing precariously on Thierfelder’s fingertip. …perspective, 2013, a brushed linoleum tile sculpture affixed to the wall by two nails, plays with time and distance, appearing differently depending on the viewer’s own position. Anxiety rises, 2013, is a printed newspaper partially revealed beneath a closed door. Intermixing sounds from the multi-space installation are funneled through windows that lead to the rooftop where one may venture and listen carefully to the “inner heartbeat” of the city.
