This event has ended.

On Thursday, November 21st Bleecker Street Arts Club will debut paintings from The Franklyn Project, an artist collective from the New York Academy of Art. The Academy believes that “mastering [the classics] is critical to the development of an artist’s personal vision and, ultimately, to the creation of vital contemporary art.” In amalgamating the inflection points of the classic modernists and in their consistent reverence of Andy Warhol, “the founding father” of pop art, The Franklyn Project seeks to realize the Academy’s vision.

The Franklyn Project is united by Andy Warhol, the muse and subject of Portraits of Our Father. Warhol created his own genre and was extremely prolific; The Franklyn Project recognizes the struggle inherent in attempting to carve out one’s own style and legacy, and in affirmation, the members decided to paint their “Aesthetic Father,” the person responsible for placing them in their own struggle.

The Franklyn Project chooses to remain anonymous in the hopes that its anonymity enables them to move at a faster pace, free from the restrictions of definition and classification. In this sense, their work is very experiential; the experience is more than simply the sum of its parts. The group formulates its ideas together and creates paintings collectively, sharing the same canvases simultaneously. The group’s size and its preoccupation with precision brings back memories of Andy Warhol’s factory, however, the ideas and comments in their work are far from manufactured – the result of many years of planning and development. Instead of assembly workers, their factory consists of highly trained artists, all with their own individual style, reminiscent of the improvisational relationship between members of a jazz band.

Members of The Franklyn Project have had solo exhibitions at Arcadia Gallery, New York; Metropol Gallery, Tallinn; Cielo Gallery, London; Solaris, Tallinn; Young Artists of Russia XXI Century, Moscow; Bridge Art Fair, Miami; and Lelia Heller Gallery, New York. They are all pursuing graduate degrees at the New York Academy of Art. This is The Franklyn Projects debut exhibition.
