“Pure and clarity, tender and trifling painting”

The art of JinKwan Kim’s is very calm and it carries silence. But if you stare at his work the more you look, you can hear sounds. The wind blowing through the grass, or the sound of grasshopper crying, the ant group gathering through the dirt, bean pods cracking and making their own sounds and such. There is no way that a painting can make sounds but it is that much of a realistic and thought provoking. It is vivid enough that it almost looks like you can hold and touch the object in your hand, and as if you have just moved the real life things just right into the paintings, but without any sounds. In order for the sound to pass by and to make the path of the wind blowing, the work of art should relatively loose and relaxing. In this piece, the artist uses the traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees, which is called hanji, and this particular hanji is very loose which can easily and perfectly express the ways of the air and the path of the wind. Sometimes things need to be empty in order to fill it up with something else, which is the audience’s share. Motive is existence and blank space is existence therefore blank space is no longer blank it is air and the wind. It is the air passing through and the path of the wind. If the sound space is full of noises then there is no space for the other sounds to come in place; of course if we are talking about these tender and soft sounds of the grasshoppers, ants, and the grass. In JinKwan Kim’s pure and transparent art works, it is full of tenderness and soft sounds. If you put your ears to these sounds, you will eventually able to open your ears to these sounds of the small seeds blossom, and all the sounds that small things in nature makes, the tender, quiet, and peaceful sounds…Chung Whan Ko Art Critic
