J. Cacciola Gallery presents four new figurative artists. The range of work in this exhibition is witness to the continued impact and broad diversity of approaches to the figure.

SHELLEY ADLER
Based in Toronto, painter Shelley Adler creates striking images that are far beyond portraiture in the conventional sense. Her loose and sometimes minimalist brushwork lends a quality of otherness to these works. Likenesses of individuals serve as an entry point to psychological inquiry.

EDWIGE FOUVRY
Belgian resident and French painter, Edwige Fouvry creates works that uses representation as a springboard for abstract, figurative explorations. Multiple successive layers of paint result in the implication of figures hovering within the canvas. Painterly gestures lend an otherworldly quality to these pieces. Negative space takes on a powerful presence in these talented hands.

CHINA MARKS
New York artist, China Marks uses found texture and imagery to create a sewn narrative around the figure. This feels both specific and nostalgic - a fleeting memory. Narrative as the works may seem to be there is no linear unfolding of story, you only catch a glimpse. China Marks wields her sewing machine as others would a brush or pencil, to bring us an unusual and powerful voice.

CIAN McLOUGHLIN
Native Dubliner, Cian McLoughlin’s, abstracted and fragmented portraits manage to convey a nearly photographic depiction of expression. The technique is thick and bold, often colorful, while the subject’s expressions are still, serene, piercing, and clear.
