Onishi Project presents “Landscape of Light and Color,” a Spring solo show of fine art photographer H. Hugh Miller. Hailing from Avon, Connecticut and Bormes-les-Mimosas, France, Miller’s international roots have reached across more than 40 countries through lifelong traveling and photography. Among his journeys with camera in hand were ventures to the USSR and Ivory Coast in the 1970s, to China and Australia in the 1990s, and to Latin America and Antarctica in the years in between. In 2010, Miller released Méditerranée, a hardcover collection of his dramatic seascapes of the French Riviera coast. Since 2010, Miller’s photography has been frequently exhibited in galleries across the United States and France.

“Landscape of Light and Color” introduces a series of photographs that capture the dance of light and color on land and sea. In different seasons and at different hours of the day, Miller presents familiar scenes in abstract and hyper-realistic design, freezing moments in time and place to frame lyrical compositions through the camera’s lens. The reflection of a colorful built shoreline in rippling water could be a canvas covered in with swirling oil paints, and a frosty barren landscape studded with iron poles could be a scene of matchstick shadow drama. Miller’s photographs play with perspective to often reverse the expected and forge new contrasts between material and immaterial elements, between reality and imagination. As Miller writes, “My pleasure in photography comes when someone smiles at one of my pictures and says, ‘I was there but never noticed that.’”

In addition to his career as a photographer, H. Hugh Miller was formerly the CEO of the Hartford International Insurance Company in Connecticut, and traveled extensively all over the world in his business endeavors.
