This event has ended.

Contemporary Korean artist, Miyeun Yi, creates works built by layers of torn and crumbled fine paper, paste, and paint on a plain canvas. She creates expressive relationships of colors and shapes that develop a symbolic dialogue expressing a mixture of preconceptions, feelings, and values. As her pieces mature and finish, all of the different aspects of her paintings reach harmony and her journey finally rests.

Beginning each work’s journey on an empty canvas, Miyeun Yi builds relationships of colors and shapes through a layering process made from paper pieces. She crumbles and tears paper in pieces and pastes them layer upon layer on top of a blank canvas. She welcomes and accepts imperfections and mistakes as they are evidence of the time and space of her labor and meaningful experience she has with each of her pieces. She revises color after her pasting is finished and uses it to open up a new empty space filled with feelings and meanings.

Yi’s work and its progression is a reflection of natural tendencies and her life’s struggles similar to her existence among nature and artificiality. Her pieces are made up of many different aspects that end up harmoniously coming together in a graceful relationship that, layer upon layer, tell the story of Lee’s journey through time and color, character, and form. She describes her journey by stating: “my struggle is to reach for a purity of mind, a possibility of no limit, and a sacred image on this ever-changing premise.”
