From Google Glass to 3D prints, the barrier between the physical and the virtual is blurred to the point that eventually there might not be a distinguishable separation. Throughout history, artists have translated forms and ideas across mediums, exploring the changes in perception and the psychic alterations that occur vis-avis these transformations. The non-linear qualities of electronic media, plus the computer’s ability to limitlessly copy, edit and transform, allows transference from physical-to-virtual, as well as virtual-to-physical, transcending medium-to-medium transformations, and allowing these six artists to create works that comment on, critique and analyze our current environment in new ways. This show brings together works by artists who are examining these convergences and transferences. Jeremy Couillard’s paintings exist both in physical and virtual space simultaneously, causing the viewer to oscillate between the realities. Elisa Giardina Papa’s brush stroke takes a gestural mark that has been adapted from analog to digital back into physical space, making possible a seemingly accidental erasure of a section of our immediate environment. Shih Chieh Huang’s video “documents” the almost literal abduction of perception from a physical space into a virtual one that in turn controls another physical form. Yuko Oda obsessively translates natural form into virtual space where it is replicated digitally and then physically to blur the line between organic and mechanical reproduction. Stephanie Rothenberg and Jeff Crouse create a virtual sweatshop that transfers the exploitation of humans from physical realities to virtual ones.
Jeremy Couillard, born in Livonia, Michigan and now based in Brooklyn, has a BA from Michigan State University (2004) and an MFA from Columbia University (2012). Most recently he had a solo exhibition with Louis B James gallery in New York and a video as part of MonkeyTown3 at Eyebeam.
Elisa Giardina Papa’s work has been exhibited at Haus für Elektronische Künste (Basel), Venice Biennial 2011- Internet Pavilion (Venice), 319 Scholes (Brooklyn), New Gallery (London), and Link Center for the Art (Brescia), among others. She received an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and a BA from Politecnico of Milan. She lives and works in Milan, Italy and Providence, Rhode Island.
Shih Chieh Huang has exhibited his sculptures and installations at the 55th Venice Biennial Collateral Event, Experimenta Biennial of Media Art Melbourne, Busan Biennial South Korea, Aichi Triennial Japan, 52nd Venice Biennial Taiwan Pavilion, Biennial Zero1 San Jose, Biennial Cuvée in Austria, the ARC Biennial Australia, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and MOCA Shanghai. Huang’s solo exhibitions have been held at Smithsonian Institute National Museum of Natural History, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, RISD Museum of Art, Beall Center for Art and Technology and MOCA Taipei. Huang have been awarded an Artist Research Fellowship from the Smithsonian Institution, a Creative Capital Grant, a Rockefeller Foundation New Media Arts Fellowship, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Sculpture Award, two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships and attended residencies at Art Omi, Skowhegan and The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation.
Yuko Oda’s artwork have been exhibited at Beijing Today Art Museum, China, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, RI, Calvin-Morris Gallery, NY, Artist Network Gallery, NY, Lumenhouse Art Space, NY, Gallery Aferro, NJ, 3RD WARD, NY, among many others. Her work has been in numerous international art festivals and fairs including the Dumbo Arts Festival (NY), DIA Center (NY), Art Supermarket (Stockholm), Art Miami Basel (FL), Bridge Art Fair (NY), Diva Art Fair (Paris), and Scope Art Fair (Basel, NY). Oda has an MFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design and BA in Studio Art and Philosophy from Duke University. She was an art resident at Chashama North in 2010, the Vermont Studio Center in 2008, and the School of Visual Arts in 1999. She teaches art at the New York Institute of Technology.
Stephanie Rothenberg has exhibited internationally in venues such as the Sundance Film Festival, MASS MoCA, LABoral, Transmediale and the Whitney Museum Artport and is a recipient of numerous awards, most recently from the Harpo Foundation and Creative Capital. Her work has been widely reviewed including Artforum, Artnet, The Brooklyn Rail and Hyperallergic. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Studies at SUNY Buffalo where she teaches courses in design and emerging practices.
Jeff Crouse’s work has been shown at The Sundance Film Festival, Laboral Art Center in Gíjon, Spain, The Performa biennial, The Eyebeam Art & Technology Center, the storytelling series, StoryCollider, The Obie Awards, and featured in the Berkeley Art Museum Net Art. He has received grants from Rhizome and Turbulence, and has completed residencies at Eyebeam and Minneapolis Art on Wheels. He has pieces on permanent display in Dayton, Ohio, and Beirut, Lebanon.
Jeff received his MS from the Digital Media program at Georgia Tech in 2006 and then joined Eyebeam as a fellow from 2007-2010. He is currently a freelance programmer with studios such as Hush, Flightphase, andThe Rockwell Group : LAB, and teaches in the Parsons Design and Technology MFA program.
