This event has ended.

Longhouse Projects presents NEW WAVES 2000-2013, by Takashi Homma. This is his first solo exhibition with the gallery.

In NEW WAVES, Takashi Homma presents a series of photographs of the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii spanning thirteen years. The photographs of waves depict the coastline continuously un-changed by climate or seasonal time. By reproducing and revisiting the same landscape repeatedly, Homma captures focused reflections of the interaction between pictorial and mental space, the waves and our selves.

NEW WAVES presents a series of work rooted in psychological phenomena, pictorial meditation, and temporal space. Homma’s NEW WAVES, are presented as a trichotomy: land/sea/sky. This triad is the paramount relationship in the seascapes, which confront the viewer by embodying variant portraits of the self. Accompanying the exhibition, Takashi Homma presents a catalogue entitled “NEW WAVES 2000-2013.” In the essay “Cresting,” which is included in the catalogue, philosopher and art critic David LaRocca writes that, Homma’s photographs “do not evoke the same response in us every time; they are, we are tempted to say, individual (or at least individuated) to such an extent that like each frame from Homma’s camera, each instant in the life of this water-as-wave exists as an enigmatic particularity.” Each photograph therefore, provides a unique lens in which to contemplate the complex relationships that arise in viewing each seascape. NEW WAVES, presented as a retrospective, embodies moments of calamity and power that intrinsically questions the perception of homogeneity through honest interpretation.

Takashi Homma (Japanese, b. 1962) lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. Homma has had solo exhibitions at Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, Kagawa, Japan; Kanazawa 21th Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan. His work is in the public collections of Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and 21st Century of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
