DODGEgallery presents A Pinch of Saffron, Dash of Vermouth, a group exhibition curated by Ted Gahl featuring:

“My first foray into alcohol came about when I rummaged through my parents liquor cabinet. I decided that the gaudiest looking bottle denoted good taste and selected vermouth. As time went on, I learned that this was obviously not for exclusive consumption. It was instead a key ingredient, a small piece of a recipe that when added to other simple items, resulted in something iconic.

I thought about this idea as it pertained to art making. Since it was first uttered, artists have constantly been in the midst of the claim that “painting is dead”, and that various analog approaches are old news. Yet with all of the technological advances available to artists today, ranging from computer/internet based imagery and influence, to the myriad of printing and fabricating techniques, these artists continue to create objects, and through them, ideas, that far exceed their modest materials.

The work in this show is made primarily with the most standard of both art and everyday studio items: paints, wood, metal, canvas, linen, Xeroxes, dyes, coffee, etc. It is the interests, approaches, and talents of these artists that make their finished pieces so engaging.

I’ve been following the practice of some of the artists in the show for years, and some for only a few months. Each piece is a delicacy in its own right, while the combination of works is a concoction that is hopefully close to perfect. Let’s eat.”

Jonathan Allmaier was born in 1979. He received his BA from Brown University in 2003 and his MFA from Tyler School of Art in 2007. He has exhibited at James Fuentes, New York, NY; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA; Loretta Howard, New York, NY; Projekt 722, Brooklyn, NY; FJORD, Philadelphia, PA; National Academy School of Fine Art, New York, NY. He has received reviews in various publications including The New Yorker, The Brooklyn Rail, Time Out New York, and New American Paintings.

Ned Colclough was born in 1976. He received his BFA from the NYSCC School of Art and Design in Alfred, NY. He has been included in group exhibitions at Zieher Smith, NY; Sara Meltzer Gallery, NY; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland, OR, Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton, NY; and in curated exhibitions by Apartment Show. He is a recent recipient of the 140 Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. Colclough lives and works in Brooklyn.

Robert Davis was born in 1970. He received his BA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1997. His work has been exhibited at Luce Gallery, Turin, Italy; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; Loretta Howard, New York, NY; South London Gallery, London, UK; The Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA; Kunstmuseum, Madgeburg, Germany; Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York, NY. He has twice been the recipient of the Chicago Artadia Grant. Davis lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Joanne Greenbaum was born in New York City in 1953. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Bard College in 1975, and currently lives and works in New York City. Greenbaum has had several solo shows in the United States and abroad at D’Amelio Terras Gallery, New York, NY; the Museum Abteiberg, Monchengladbach, Germany; Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, Switzerland; Baloise Art Forum, Basel, Switzerland; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago, IL, Nicholas Krupp, Basel, Switzerland; Rupert Goldsworthy, Berlin, Germany. She has been included in group exhibitions at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; greengrassi, London, UK; Sam Lee Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA; de Pury and Luxembourg, Zurich, Switzerland; Grolier Club, New York, NY; P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, Queens; Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, UK; Armand Hammer Museum, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA. Greenbaum has received several awards including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Grant and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. She has been an artist in residence at the Chianti Foundation, Marfa, TX, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Lower East Side Printshop, among others. Greenbaum lives and works in New York, NY.

Angel Otero received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009. Recent exhibitions include El Museo del Barrio’s The [S] Files, El Museo’s 6th Biennial; Queens International: Three Points Make a Triangle, Queens Museum, New York; and Angel Otero, Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, North Carolina, among others. Otero is the recipient of the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship in the Visual Arts. His work can be found in collections at DePaul University Museum, Chicago, Chicago, IL; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS; and the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Meghan Petras received her BS from SUNY New Paltz in 1998 and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. Her work has been exhibited at Blackston Gallery, New York, NY; RISD Museum, Providence, RI; Sol Koffer Gallery, Providence, RI; Beacon Arts Building, Los Angeles, CA; Bull and Ram, New York, NY. She has been the recipient of various awards and residencies including Skidmore College Artist Painting Fellowship, Vermont Studio Center Artists Grant and Residency, and RISD Graduate Fellowship. Petras lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Josh Smith was born in 1976 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad, most notably The American Dream at The Brant Foundation in Greenwich, CT in 2011, Who Am I at De Hallen Haarlem in 2009 and Hidden Darts at Museum Moderner Kunst in Vienna in 2008. He has also participated in several important group exhibitions, including The Painting Factory: Abstraction after Warhol at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Le Printemps de Septembre in Toulouse, ILLUMInations in the 2011 Venice Biennale, The Generational: Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum in New York, Uncertain States of America at the Serpentine Gallery in London & Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo, the 2007 Lyon Biennial, and Wade Guyton, Seth Price, Josh Smith, Kelley Walker, at Kunsthalle Zürich. The artist lives and works in New York.

Johannes VanDerBeek was born in 1982 in Baltimore, MD. He graduated from Cooper Union in 2004. His work has been exhibited at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; PS 1 Contemporary Art Center, Queens, NY; Sculpture Center, Queens, NY; the Tang Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY; Museum 52, New York, NY; Portugal Arte 10 Biennial, Lisbon, Portugal. VanDerBeek lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
