“What’s at the heart of skateboarding? Friends, exploration, music, art, fun—it’s more than just what happens between the top of the stairs and the bottom. It’s taking bits and pieces from everything around us and making it our own: the streets as well as the overgrown backyards, our history and also the future, old records and new jams, design and graffiti, road trips in a $400 car or a Greyhound ticket, falling down and getting back up, slappies and shooting photos and switch backtails, and sharing a beer with your buds.

It’s about reshaping the world and carving out our places in it.
We all come from somewhere and we’re all going to end up somewhere—but right here and right now, in the middle of coming and going, we’re alive. Living together, creating together, exploring together, growing together—that’s the spirit at the heart of Corpse Corps.”
- Andreas Trolf

Corpse Corps Boards presents Let’s Smoke Some Beers: Group Illustrative Exhibition is a gallery showcasing of commissioned monochromatic artwork by a diverse collection of over forty contemporary artists asked to visually explore the carefree implications of the show title through their individual aesthetic, wit and precision.

These artists’ backgrounds and areas of influence range from skateboarding, tattoo, and graffiti to the painting, illustration, sign painting, animation, printmaking, comic, and graphic design arenas.

The simplicity behind strong impact is not simple. Dedication to craft is required to create these artworks, and it is with a wink and a nod that these talented individuals explore a fantastic unreality of their own control. The messages may lend themselves to a playful daydream of ranging maturity, often grounded with iconic or suggestive subject-matter, but also a well-executed visceral escape, free of comparison or time.

This group of artists is being showcased with every intention of celebrating illustration and handstyle as an incorporation into the world surrounding them, where they independently draw from their quiver of experience and passion, however sophisticated, fantastic, or lowbrow.

They live this shit in the way they want. We put it out there. Now, Let’s Smoke Some Beers.
