Andrew Witkin “simal-, simil-, simul-, -semble”

Theodore:Art

poster for Andrew Witkin “simal-, simil-, simul-, -semble”

This event has ended.

In 1993, on one of those wonderful visits to 420 West Broadway, Stephanie Theodore and her then constant companion/super-hot-dog/ queen ween, Misha, were anointed by the ooh-ing, coo-ing and ah-ing of none other than Leo Castelli and the regal Ileana Sonnabend. “Vut a vundervul dog you have!”

Ms. Theodore is doing her best to emulate the wonderful Ms. Sonnabend as a role model. Moving from a fifth floor walkup in Soho to the basement level in Bushwick and now, in 2013, to a ground level space twice as big, Theodore:Art is making moves to make this happen. While the accent is Long Island, not Bucharest, the passion and class are the same. The height is, approximately, too.

With that said, one must remember, elementary geometry has two infinities: one is arrived at through perpetual addition and the other through perpetual division. Moreover, the best questions are those that are bigger than the sum of their answers.

With that, Andrew Witkin brings a new project to Theodore:Art.

5 large works on recycled fleece, all with the same text, each redacted differently
5 recently rediscovered drypoints by Henri Héran (née Paul Hermann), conserved and custom framed
5 victorian doors altered to different levels of destruction/restoration
5 pedestals as thresholds
5 chairs made from the same sheet of Baltic (truthfully: Russian) plywood
25 books, each different, yet all from the same source
50 of the same booklet on Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
