This event has ended.

Salomon Arts Gallery presents A COLETTE/SANDY COLLABORATION, an exhibition of more than twenty works by Colette aka Lumiere.

On view will be a selection of Colette’s work -- much of it photo-based and mixed media on canvas-- that was excavated or naturally embellished after Hurricane Sandy from her Laboratoire Lumiere studio/storage. The space was a modular art installation where she executed her art experiments for more than 30 years and where her life’s treasures were hidden. The studio, located in the West Village, was flooded with over 9 feet of floodwater. Colette was able to retrieve most of her art. Among the works on view at the gallery will be selections from the Records From the Story of My Life series LP size (1978-2007), metaphysical portraits including Metaphysical Portrait of Jim Jarmusch, 2012, Colettesized portraits including Colettesized Portrait of Gabriel Byrne, 2006, and Postcards from the Story of My Life Sandy-impacted 4 x 6 inch photographs documenting her performances and installations from the 1970s.

Colette’s unique alchemical art process “Colettesizing” often includes the destruction of materials to achieve the look of ruins. Tools used include rags, scissors, knives, and hammers. Sometimes the ingredients include nature’s elements such as fire. The works in this show all incorporate the element of water -- Sandy’s special contribution.

For Colette, 2012 began with a episode of art plagiarism (the ongoing “Colette-Gaga Saga”) and ended with Hurricane Sandy’s fury. The artist, gifted with the art of transformation and re-invention, has proven once again that she can turn hell into art, and fight terror with glamour.

With this new year, the artist has turned her attention to commissioned portraits. In her spare time, she can be found in one of her warehouses restoring all the treasures and masterpieces that survived the flood, preparing for her retrospective.

Colette was born French in Tunis, Tunisia. She grew up in Nice, France, before arriving in the U.S. She has lived and worked in New York City since 1984.
