This event has ended.

Carole Pierce’s latest exhibition focuses on the transitional properties of air and light. The paintings are expressions of the ephemeral, depicting a fleeting moment of time, one that is as elusive as air.

First Bloom, oil on canvas, 60 x 60 inches Pierce has the remarkable ability to create a tangible sense of place and an emotional connection to the subject matter without relying on the well-worn traditions. While her subject matter may be grounded in tradition, her approach to the subject is entirely contemporary. The paintings seem almost paradoxical to a viewer, more like dreams or hallucinations than reality. While the place is often made clear, a sense of time is ever evolving as you continue to observe these works. Visual deceptions and symbols of psychological states appear and reappear. The landscapes and abstractions are artificially recalling a moment in time and place that may have occurred in a dream and may never return again. The use of ambiguous perspective and sights create the idea of nature rather than precisely depicting nature itself, which can appear unsettling or disconcerting. These paintings work at an instinctual level, while in reality, being very difficult to pin down to a specific location or time.

The paintings create a visceral sensation of the experience rather than a pictorial representation. This is an idealized view of nature that is everchanging, moment to moment, due to the global conditions of our environment.

There is a sense that these paintings are of a place one longs to return to, nature on a pedestal. These paintings show a sense of longing for what has or may be lost, as well as celebrating the mystery and beauty that exists. This is an artist fully in control of the art-making process and showing a mastery in technique that results in these evocative works.

This is Carole Pierce’s 3rd solo exhibition at J. Cacciola Gallery.
