This event has ended.

The Parlour is pleased to present “Show #6”.

As spring is here so is Show #6. With spring, this show celebrates the return of color and blossoming nature, which is a common thread through all the work in varying degrees. The artists in Show # 6 hold process in high regard. Their pieces are labor-intensive and require strong attention to detail. This is not their primary concern rather it is a means to an end.

Liz Nielsen starts from an idea and then develops her process to get there. Using transparent color filters, She creates tiny collages on glass. She then exposes them on paper where the color is reversed and the image enlarged. These ideas result in abstracted shapes of color that change throughout the process. This metamorphosis which holds an uncertainty and surprise as to the outcome shows a deep appreciation for process and how it plays a significant role in her art making.

Joo Choon Lin likes to explore the image world of new technology. Using rudimentary tools such as stop motion film, she creates imagery that shows nature meeting up with a hi-tech world. In her video piece, “Supersensible Realm”, hand drawn and photo-shopped images of drops of water float up out of a video of an ocean –think of a Garage Band playing techno music. Technology and nature melt together and seem to react to each other in an awkward manner.

Michelle Matson manipulates paper to create three-dimensional objects. Her life-size women stretch, bend and pose. Combining nature and female sport essentials such as sneakers and sport bras, they startle the viewer for their ridiculousness and perhaps hidden meanings.

Chris Fennel glues small circular pieces of paper onto a canvas. Slowly, and methodically he creates many layers of color. Although he is concerned about the relationship between the edges and space between these tiny shapes, his main concern is with the outcome. The resulting image moves and undulates, and as he describes it; they "breathe."

This Show is colorful and bright, influenced by nature and the organic world with a little technology thrown in.
