Nelson’s ethereal abstract canvases, in their natural green, blue and grey hues punctuated by bold marks, mimic the landscape and are the product of Nelson’s intuitive reaction to her surroundings: trees, rocks, water and sky. The overall impression conveyed through the work is one of tranquility, strength, and natural beauty with occasional unexpected powerful burst of color and energy.
On display will be both large and small oils on canvas depicting evolving organic colors and forms. Nelson worked daily in her studio on these paintings in order to create works that are at once completely individual and yet closely related to one another. The result is a strong, cohesive and compelling body of work.
Nelson comments on the work in Traveling Light:
In this current series I have left visible more of the unconstrained marks and lines that signal the beginning of a painting. Marks drawn with oil sticks have become an important compositional element. Overall there is less control, as I strive to let the paint move and react fluidly. At critical moments I sometimes ask myself, ‘what does this want to be?’ In this way I allow the painting to direct me instead of trying to control the outcome. This surrender builds a bond between me and each individual work, and is also recognizable by the viewer. I am always surprised by each piece and how I arrived there.
Nelson has been exhibiting in solo and group shows for the past ten years. She attended Maine College of Art in Portland, and received a BFA from Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She was an artist in residence at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from 2004-2008, and has been an instructor at the Woodstock School of Art from 2009 through the present. Her work hangs in private and public collections throughout the country.
