Callicoon Fine Arts presents an inverted rebus of unspecified feeling, Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control. The rough concrete floor, the gas pipes turning corners in the space, the too bright light streaming through the storefront glass. We contend with an ecstatic infrastructure. We flip it back on itself for a summer show, an exhibition with contributions by Nicholas Buffon, A.K. Burns, Tamar Halpern, Maria Petschnig and Luther Price.
With paper, paint, foam and objects that otherwise tend to just lie around, Nicholas Buffon has been making a series of miniature three-dimensional constructions of charmingly disheveled domestic scenes. A.K. Burns’ sewn diptych of US flags, hovering above the gallery, has a target dyed across its stars and stripes in the self-same colors that normally fly. In Tamar Halpern’s very new paintings, it is her cat’s inky paw print that presides over the canvases, enlargements of the accidental traces of those princely beings that captivate us at home. Maria Petschnig’s menagerie of photographs displayed on a dresser drawer depict her costumed permutations, while a sculpture in silky polyester underscores a discomfiting fantasy. Luther Price offers photo prints made from his most recent 35mm slide collages titled “View-Master Pop”. Using stripes of watery scotch-tape, images of ferocious dinosaurs cut-out from toy stereoscopic reels are locked into the slide with grinning human skeleton stickers. Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control.
