This event has ended.

The scale, intricate detail and impeccable quality of Garel’s bronze sculptures is striking. He begins his creative process with large charcoal drawings, which serve as preliminary studies for his sculptures. These highly technical drawings provide a revealing look into his time and labor intensive work, and often depict a series of visible under-drawings with fully developed forms overlapping. Garel’s drawings are almost sculptural in the sense that many of them present the subject from several different angles. After careful planning in his studio, Garel carves his animal busts and skulls in wood or styrofoam, which he uses to cast limited edition bronze sculptures. The patinas are exceptional as the works appear to be made of actual wood or bone. Both Garel’s sculptures and drawings demonstrate his innate artistic intelligence and deep comprehension of the anatomy of his subjects.

Born in 1975 in France, Garel received 5 prestigious awards for drawing and sculpting between 2001 and 2005 from institutions including the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Paris and the Salon de Mai, Paris. Garel has been commissioned for several notable public installations, including a series of sculptures in the Public Gardens in Lille. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and his work appears in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. He currently lives and works in Normandy, France.
